NotesThis item offers a glimpse into the bureaucratic obstacles which were endemic in America's intelligence services prior to World War II. At this time Astor did not have any official duties in intelligence, but was acting as a private operative for his friend President Roosevelt. "The club" refers to Astor's private espionage ring comprised of New York's elite socialites and businessmen.
